Milam County was organized in 1837 and named in honor of Texas revolutionary figure Benjamin Rush Milam. Drafted in 1868 by Joseph Martin, the unique greenish coloring of some of the surveys indicates land titles issued through Texas empresario Captain Sterling C. Robertson. Unfortunately, some of these titles later conflicted with earlier 11-league grants in the same area.
