Description

Baylor County was formed in 1858 and named for Henry W. Baylor, a surgeon in the Texas Rangers during the Mexican- American War. The early county was the site of extensive battles between free-grass ranchers and incoming settlers. Land skirmishes and corruption led to the resignation of many early county officials and the murder of a county judge in 1879. The Texas Rangers finally brought peace to the area by the 1880s.
