West Texas was painted by one of El Paso's most gifted and prolific landscape painters, Eugene B. Thurston. After graduating from El Paso High School, he studied commercial art for two years by correspondence. Except for his service during World War II, Thurston worked at various jobs in El Paso between 1920 and 1952 including schools, a laundry and a greeting card company. He reportedly produced about six paintings a month, even at the age of eighty.
