Third Mission represents Mission San Juan Capistrano near San Antonio. The artist is either Jean Louis Theodore Gentilz or his niece Louise Fretelliere. Gentilz came to Texas in 1844. He lived in San Antonio, painted around the city and taught at St. Marys College from its founding in 1852 until 1894. Gentilz is known for his realistic paintings, which are respected for their historical value as accurate portrayals of early Texas life. Louise Fretelliere studied art with her uncle and eventually taught others.
