House in the Country was painted by artist John Eliot Jenkins. Born in Onaga, Kansas, he was lured to France as a young man to study painting with Claude Monet. He arrived in Austin, Texas, around 1908 where he was chief inspector for the Western Railroad Weighing Association but painting portraits and landscapes remained an intense interest for the artist.
