Description

Settlement of Austin's Colony was intended by the artist to be the first in a series depicting important moments in Texas history. It shows Stephen F. Austin rallying Anglo colonists against a Karankawa Indian raid about 1824. Figures from the colony included land commissioner Baron de Bastrop (left), secretary Samuel L. Williams (right) and surveyor Horatio Chriesman (at Austin's feet). The painting has been on display in the House Chamber since c. 1889 with the State purchasing the piece in 1928.
