Audie Murphy was born near Kingston, Texas. He enlisted in the army at 18, fought in eight campaigns and was wounded three times. During his World War II career, he received thirty-three awards, citations, and decorations and won a battlefield promotion to second lieutenant. After the war, he pursued several careers including a movie actor, a song writer, an author and a poet. At the time of his death, Murphy was the most decorated combat soldier of World War II.
