This painting by Henry Arthur McArdle (1836-1908), the subject of our poster reproduction, was completed in 1895 after years of painstaking research. To capture the decisive battle of April 21, 1836, the artist interviewed dozens of surviving veterans and measured and photographed every aspect of the battlefield. Sam Houston leads the charge as he did in life. Notably, McArdle gives special prominence to the Tejano forces led by Juan Seguin. With the cry, Remember the Alamo. Texan forces took the exhausted Mexican army completely by surprise near present-day La Porte. In combat that lasted just 18 minutes, the Texans exacted over 650 fatalities and captured more than 500 Mexican troops, while suffering 11 killed and 30 wounded in their own ranks.

McArdles papers reveal an admiration for the courage of the combatants on both sides. The monumental original, measuring eight feet tall and 13 feet long, is part of the Texas Capitol Historical Art Collection and hangs in the Senate Chamber of the Texas State Capitol.
