Description

Mirabeau B. Lamar was born in Georgia and succeeded at many professional endeavors there before traveling with James W. Fannin, Jr. to Texas in 1835. In 1836 he was commander of the cavalry at the Battle of San Jacinto. He served as the Vice President and later as President of the Republic of Texas before largely retiring from public life. Lamar became U.S. Minister to Nicaragua and Costa Rica in 1857 for two years.
