Description

Draftsman Carl Wilhelm von Rosenberg’s map of Montague County is the earliest map representing the original land grants in the county issued until 1858. Von Rosenberg, who had worked as an apprentice surveyor in his native Prussia, immigrated to Texas with his family in 1849. Von Rosenberg worked at the Land Office, first as a draftsman in 1856, and later as a chief draftsman between 1861 and 1863 and again between 1865 and 1867. During the Civil War, he served as a topographical engineer for the Confederate Army. After his work at the Land Office, Von Rosenberg worked at a land agency and wrote a critical account of the German Emigration Company (Adelsverein).
