Description

Front Street, Matagorda, Texas, May 25, 1852 depicts the artists impressions of a town located on the Gulf of Mexico, 90 miles southwest of Houston. The artist arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1851 where he painted several portraits of prominent citizens and their families. Later that year the artist moved to Austin, where he was commissioned by the legislature to restore a portrait of Stephen F. Austin that was probably destroyed in the 1881 Capitol fire.
